Question 11 of 13

Activity 9

Let’s pretend you’re at a cocktail party and someone asks, “So what do you do?” You can reply, “I’m an expert,” but that will get a lot of funny looks Instead, try the XYZ introduction pattern. It looks like this:

I help X (a specific audience) ______________________________

Do/Understand Y (your topic of expertise ______________________________

So that they can Z (get a specific benefit) ______________________________

For example in my own case as an International Executive Coach:

X: I help people

Y: Understand how to get out of the ‘Matrix’ – (living a life trading your valuable time for the hard earned dollar just to pay the bills)

Z: So that they can earn multiple streams of revenue, have time and financial freedom, make a difference and be happy and fulfilled – I call this ‘living the life you imagine’.

Question 12 of 13

Activity 10

Take a piece of paper and a draw a line down the middle. On one side of that line, write down all the things you believe you are great at. I call this the ‘flatter yourself’ list. You’ve got to pat yourself on the back and make yourself sound amazing, because you are!

For example if you are a wellness coach you might list something like understanding how to dig deep into your customer’s biggest triggers for pain or stress. That skill would make you great as a wellness coach. If you are a business coach your ‘flatter yourself’ list will look very different. You may have skills for like being able to read and understand a profit and loss statement.

Now when your done listing all the things you are great at, write the second list on the other side of that middle line. This one isn’t quite as fun, but it’s equally as important, I promise. This is the ‘let’s be real test’ as I like to call it. These are all the things you struggle with. I come across people who are not real about their weaknesses so then no one knows what they need help with and new skills they may need to learn so they can become a better equipped person

So here is my own self-awareness test

1.     Flatter Yourself List

a.     Strong leader

b.     Compelling Communicator

c.      High Achiever

d.     Competitive Drive

e.     Independent Worker

2.     Let’s Be Real List

a.     Attention to detail – Need to delegate more

b.     Perfectionist – I keep reminding myself that Perfection does not exist

c.      Impatient - Meditation has helped me improved significantly here

d.     Not a technical person but disciplined myself very hard to learn this new skill and now I enjoy it

e.     Easily unimpressed – I am getting better J

Now take what you have drawn on the paper and answer the following;

1.     What is your Flatter Yourself List - List 5 things here.

2.     What is your ‘Let’s Be Real’ List - List 5 things here.

Question 13 of 13

Activity 11

The final activity is to write your Business Obituary

When starting anything new I always like to begin with the end in mind and I really mean the END!

The question here is how do you want your business to be remembered when it is not around anymore? What kind of legacy do you want your business to have? When everything is said and done, when the clouds part, when the dust settles, whatever metaphors you want to use, when all is finished, how do you want people to talk about you and the impact that you’ve had through your business?

I am challenging you to write your business obituary now! Ask yourself not only how do I want my business to be remembered, but also what would I want people to say about it?

You’ve got to reach for the stars when you are doing this activity. Hold nothing back in anyway whatsoever when writing this obituary.

This is like vision board stuff.

The Millennials are all about creating vision boards. In 2007/2008 I built an a multi award winning house just outside London in England and my daughter Kimberley was 14 at that time and she said to me one day “Dad, I’m working on vision boards”. She started showing me all these pictures of different living rooms and another full set of different kitchen designs. She was of course envisioning how the kitchen would look, how her bedroom would look, how the garden would look etc. She was dreaming up the perfect home for us. This is what you need to do when it comes to your business obituary

To help you here are some things you may wish to consider;

·        How many lives did you change?

·        How did you change them?

·        How did your products and your services make your customers feel (the experience) when they used them?

·        How much money did your business make every year that your business was in business?

This is a very important activity because I always say your brand is what people say about you when you are not at the dinner party, industry conference, coffee meeting or networking event
